秋季大祭の初日、9月20日は「例祭」が執り行われます。
これは子安神社にとって一年で最も重要な神事であり、厳粛な空気の中で進められます。
例祭の流れ
例祭はまず、境内の橘社から始まります。橘社には、平安時代に子安神社を創建した橘右京少輔が祀られています。
創建者に感謝と祈りを捧げた後、本殿にて御祭神・木花開耶姫命のもとで例祭が斎行されます。
この流れには、神社の由緒を重んじ、創建の精神を今に伝える意味があります。
子安の舞
例祭では、子安神社独自の奉納舞「子安の舞」が舞われます。
この舞は、宮司が作詞し、宮内庁楽師（元楽長）が作曲・作舞を手がけたものです。伝統的な雅楽の形式を踏まえながらも、子安神社の信仰を象徴する独自の舞として位置づけられています。
舞人は「采女装束」と呼ばれる平安時代の女官の装束を身にまとい、優美な姿で舞を奉じます。
歌詞には、八王子の自然と御祭神・木花開耶姫命を讃える思いが込められています。
「鳥の啼く 多摩の横山 神奈備に清水もさやけく さくや木花」
鳥の声が響く多摩の横山、神奈備の清らかな水、そして木花開耶姫命の美しさと清らかさを歌い上げています。地域の風土と御祭神を結びつける詞であり、舞を通じて祈りが形となります。
例祭の意義
例祭は子安神社にとって最も大切な祭典であり、「子安の舞」の奉納はその象徴的な場面です。
創建者・橘右京少輔の思いを継ぎ、御祭神・木花開耶姫命への感謝と安産・子育ての祈りを込めて、今も変わらず続けられています。

The Annual Festival and the Dance of Koyasu
The first day of the Autumn Grand Festival, September 20, is dedicated to the Annual Festival, the most important ritual of the year at Koyasu Shrine. The atmosphere is solemn, reflecting the shrine’s deepest traditions.
The Ritual Flow
The festival begins at the Tachibana Shrine, dedicated to Tachibana no Ukyō Shōyū, who founded Koyasu Shrine during the Heian period. After prayers of gratitude are offered there, the ceremony proceeds to the Main Hall, where the enshrined deity, Konohanasakuya-hime-no-Mikoto, is honored.
This order reflects the importance of remembering the shrine’s origins while carrying its founding spirit into the present.
The Dance of Koyasu
During the Annual Festival, the shrine’s original dance, known as “Koyasu no Mai” (Dance of Koyasu), is performed.
The lyrics were composed by the chief priest, while the music and choreography were created by a court musician of the Imperial Household Agency, a former head of its music department. Rooted in the tradition of gagaku, this dance symbolizes the unique faith of Koyasu Shrine.
The dancers wear “Uneme” costumes, traditional attire modeled on the court ladies of the Heian period, and perform with grace and dignity.
The lyrics celebrate the natural beauty of Hachioji and the divine presence of Konohanasakuya-hime:
“Birdsong echoes on Tama’s Yokoyama, sacred hills with pure flowing waters, blooming Konohana.”
The words connect the local landscape with the shrine’s deity, turning prayer into a visible and graceful offering.
Significance of the Annual Festival
The Annual Festival is the most sacred day of the Autumn Grand Festival, and the Dance of Koyasu embodies its spirit.
It continues the founder Tachibana’s legacy and expresses gratitude to Konohanasakuya-hime, while carrying prayers for safe childbirth and child-rearing into the future.
