東京都八王子市に鎮座する子安神社では、毎年9月20日から23日にかけて「秋季大祭」が執り行われます。
秋季大祭は、子安神社における年間祭事の中でも最も重要な祭典であり、古来より地域と人々を結ぶ祈りの中心となってきました。

秋季大祭は4日間にわたり、境内に祀られるそれぞれの社で神事が営まれることが大きな特色です。
初日の例祭をはじめ、祖霊祭・放生祭、そして最終日の泣き相撲へと続き、神社全体が祈りと賑わいに包まれます。

日程と内容

・9月20日　例祭（橘社・本殿）
子安神社の創建者である橘右京少輔を祀る橘社での祭典から始まり、本殿で御祭神・木花開耶姫命の例祭が執り行われます。最も厳粛な一日であり、神社にとって大切な節目となります。

・9月21日　祖霊祭（祖霊社）
戦没者や神社に功労のあった方々を祀る祖霊社にて、御霊を慰め感謝を捧げる祭典です。地域の歴史と歩みを受け継ぐ大切な祈りの日です。

・9月22日　放生祭（弁財天社）
境内の池に祀られる弁財天社にて、稚鯉を池に放ち、命と自然への感謝を示す神事が行われます。清らかな水面に広がる光景は、祈りの心を象徴します。

・9月23日　泣き相撲（境内）
赤ちゃんの健やかな成長を願う伝統行事。力士に抱かれた赤ちゃんの泣き声が「無病息災」を祈る象徴となり、境内は多くの家族で賑わいます。この日は縁日も立ち、最終日を華やかに締めくくります。

秋季大祭の意義

秋季大祭は、例祭を中心に、祖霊祭・放生祭・泣き相撲が連なって構成されています。
創建の由緒を大切にし、戦没者や功労者への感謝を忘れず、生命を尊び、子どもの成長を祈る。

Koyasu Shrine Autumn Grand Festival

Koyasu Shrine in Hachioji, Tokyo, holds its Autumn Grand Festival every year from September 20 to 23.
This festival is the most important annual ritual of the shrine and has long been the central prayer connecting the local community and its people.

A distinctive feature of the Autumn Grand Festival is that rituals are performed over four days at the various subsidiary shrines within the grounds. Beginning with the Annual Festival, the ceremonies continue with the Memorial Service for the Ancestral Spirits, the Hōjōsai (Releasing Fish Ceremony), and finally the Nakisumo (Crying Sumo), enveloping the shrine in both solemn prayer and vibrant celebration.

Schedule and Events

・September 20: Annual Festival (Tachibana Shrine and Main Hall)
The ceremonies begin at Tachibana Shrine, dedicated to the shrine’s founder Tachibana no Ukyō Shōyū, and continue at the Main Hall, where the enshrined deity Konohanasakuya-hime-no-Mikoto is honored. This is the most solemn day and a significant milestone for the shrine.

・September 21: Memorial Service for the Ancestral Spirits (Soreisha)
Held at the Soreisha, this ritual honors the spirits of those who died in war as well as those who made great contributions to the shrine. It is a day to offer gratitude and remembrance, carrying on the legacy of the community.

・September 22: Hōjōsai – Releasing Fish Ceremony (Benzaiten Shrine)
At the Benzaiten Shrine by the pond, young carp are released into the water as a gesture of respect for life and gratitude to nature. The sight of the carp swimming gracefully on the clear surface of the pond reflects the purity of the prayer.

・September 23: Nakisumo – Crying Sumo (Shrine Grounds)

実は、梨は昔「中酢（なかず）」と呼ばれていました。
その名の由来は、梨の中心部分に酸味があり「中が酸っぱい＝中酢」と言われたことからです。
そして「なかず」という響きが「泣かす」に通じるため、泣き相撲とのご縁で梨の市を同時開催しているのです。
日本らしい言葉のつながりを大切にした行事といえるでしょう。

Nakisumo and the Pear Market at Hachioji Koyasu Shrine | The Origin of “Nakasu”

At Hachioji Koyasu Shrine in Tokyo, the annual Nakisumo (Crying Sumo) is held together with the “Pear Market.”
Nakisumo is a traditional ritual in which babies are encouraged to cry loudly, and their voices are offered in prayer for healthy growth. But why is this event connected with pears?

In the past, pears in Japan were called “Nakasu.”
The name came from the fact that the inside of the pear was sour — “naka” meaning inside, and “su” meaning sour.
The word “Nakasu” also sounds like “nakasu,” which means “to make cry” in Japanese.
Because of this unique wordplay, the Pear Market has been linked to Nakisumo at Koyasu Shrine, creating a symbolic connection between the ritual of crying and the fruit of autumn.

Pears have long been a beloved fruit in Japan, representing the flavors of autumn with their refreshing sweetness.

At Koyasu Shrine, certain days are designated as Goshuin Writing Days. On these days, each Goshuin is handwritten with care directly into your Goshuin book.
While Goshuin are usually available as pre-written sheets, on Writing Days you can experience the warmth of a personally inscribed seal.

How to receive a Goshuin

1. First, complete your shrine visit and prayers.
2. Apply for a Goshuin at the reception desk.
3. If you bring your own Goshuin book, it will be written in directly on the spot.

Announcement of the September Limited Goshuin “Chrysanthemum” Design

At Koyasu Shrine in Hachioji, Tokyo, we offer a special “monthly goshuin” with a different theme each month.
For September 2025, our limited goshuin features the chrysanthemum, a flower that symbolizes autumn in Japan.

The chrysanthemum has long been cherished as a flower of longevity and good health, and it is an essential motif for the traditional festival known as the Chrysanthemum Festival (Chōyō no Sekku).
Koyasu Shrine is dedicated to the deities of safe childbirth and child-rearing, and this goshuin design expresses prayers for healthy growth and pure, peaceful days.

This chrysanthemum goshuin will be available only from September 1 through September 30.
As quantities are limited, we encourage visitors to receive it early.

泣き相撲の必勝ハチマキの作り方と意味

赤ちゃんの健やかな成長を祈る行事として知られる「泣き相撲」。その中でひときわ目を引くのが、赤ちゃんが頭に巻く「必勝ハチマキ」です。
このハチマキは単なる飾りではなく、安産祈願の腹帯に由来していることをご存じでしょうか。由来や意味を知ったうえで作ると、より深い祈りが込められます。

泣き相撲ハチマキの由来

昔から妊婦さんは戌の日に「岩田帯（いわたおび）」と呼ばれる晒し布を巻き、母子の無事を願いました。出産後、その腹帯は役目を終えますが、命を守ってくれた布を捨てるのは忍びないもの。その一つが「必勝ハチマキ」です。安産祈願の布が「これからの健やかな成長を願う布」へと形を変えることで、命のバトンを受け継ぐ意味が込められています。

必勝ハチマキの材料と準備

泣き相撲のハチマキは、家庭でも簡単に手作りできます。用意するものは以下の通りです。

• 布（晒しや木綿。長さ80〜100cm、幅5cm程度）
• 布用ペン、墨、または油性マーカー又は筆
• 裁ちばさみ
• アイロン（端処理用）

伝統的には安産祈願で用いた腹帯を再利用しますが、現代では新しい布を使っても問題ありません。晒しは軽くて丈夫、通気性も良いので赤ちゃんにも安心です。

今回の御朱印には、安産・子育てにご縁のある戌張り子や底抜け柄杓のモチーフをあしらい、俳人・山口誓子（やまぐちせいし）の句「湧き出づる清水も産みの安らかに」を墨書いた特別なものです。
この句は、当社の安産祈願において巫女が舞を奉納する際にも唱えられ、母子の健やかな日々を祈る心と重なります。

御朱印はお守りやお札とは異なり、祈願の証しではなく「参拝の証」としてお受けいただけるものです。安産祈願をお受けになる方だけでなく、どなたでもお受けいただけます。

Koyasu Shrine in Hachioji offers a special limited goshuin on Inu-no-Hi (the Day of the Dog).

This goshuin features motifs of the traditional papier-mâché dog (inu hariko) and the “bottomless” bamboo ladle, both symbols connected to safe childbirth and child-rearing. It also includes the haiku by the modern poet Seishi Yamaguchi (1901–1994):
“Clear spring water wells up, bringing peace to childbirth.”

This verse is recited at our prayers for safe delivery, when a shrine maiden performs a sacred dance before the deity, expressing prayers for the health and peace of mother and child.

Please note that a goshuin is not the same as an ofuda or omamori (amulet). It is a record of your visit to the shrine, and can be received by anyone, not only those who come for safe delivery prayers.
